Speaker, Author, Artist, Activist

River's College Topics Include:

Surviving the Weekend: Can You Drink Responsibly?
I give a frank and lively personal narrative of surviving my own problems with alcohol including an alcohol related sexual assault in my first year of college. I had to face how my dependence on alcohol had wreaked havoc in my life and make critical lifestyle changes.

I do not advocate abstinence from alcohol but rather informed choice responsibility and basic awareness. Through humor and audience participation I examine how to recognize the warning signs of alcohol abuse, how attitudes impact risky behavior and achieve a better understanding of how drugs and alcohol affect sexual decisions.

SEX 101: Beyond Safer Sex
This is another very interactive talk that addresses how negotiation, communication, intimacy and chemistry affect our sexuality. Through my personal experience of living with HIV for 16 years I talk about how to make safer sex not just a better choice but desirable one. I use inspiration in place of fear as a way to help students change their sexual behavior. I also include the reality of how alcohol and drugs affect our sexual choices and increase the possibility of sexual assault.

I do a combination of both programs in:

SEX 101: Surviving The Weekend
It is a lively interactive forum where we explore realistic options for college students when it comes to sex, alcohol and communication.

If you are interested in something more performances oriented I do a one woman show called Sex, Cellulite and Large Farm Equipment: One Girls Guide to Living and Dying.

In this performances I use my life experiences that includes surviving two terminal illnesses, an arrest for obscenity, running a marathon, overcoming an eating disorder, the death of a spouse, being named poet laureate, getting married again and coming to a place of great contentment and joy. It is very funny at the same time educational.

River is also available for motivational Corporate programs.
